Notes on a Neo4j graph model
A note is a piece of text on the canvas: a design decision, an open question, a reminder of what a relationship means. Attach it to a node or relationship and it follows along when the model is rearranged.
Adding and writing
Click Add note next to Add node, press N, or right-click empty canvas and choose Add note. A new note is white with a black border and opens ready to type. Enter saves; Shift+Enter makes a new line. Select text and press B or I in the small bar next to the note (or ⌘B / ⌘I) for bold and italic; the same bar has − and + for the note's text size (6–80). Text wraps at the note's width, and the note grows in height by itself when the text needs it. Resize it by dragging a corner.
Attaching a note
If a node or relationship is selected when you add a note, the note is attached to it. To attach an existing note, drag from the note's edge (the ring that lights up when you hover it) to a node or relationship, the same gesture as drawing a relationship from a node. Each drag adds one more thing the note sits on; a note can sit on several nodes and relationships at once.
An attached note is drawn with a thin dashed line to each thing it sits on, between the centers. When the node moves, the note moves with it. A note on a relationship follows the relationship's midpoint, and a note on two nodes follows the average, half the way per node. This also holds during Arrange and when models are merged. The note is visible when at least one of the things it sits on is visible.
When a node or relationship is deleted, the note lets go of it and stays on the rest. If nothing is left, the note is detached and stays where it is.
Removing a link
Click the dashed line to select that link (it turns the accent color) and press Delete. Only that link is removed; the note and the node stay.
Styling a note or a link
With a note selected, the Format tab has its color (the same palette as nodes, without black), border color and border width (0–10), text size, and alignment. With a link selected, the tab shows Link with a line color and a line width (0.5–10); the default is a gray chosen against the background, 1.5 wide. "Reset to default style" also takes every visible link back to the default.
Notes and layers
Notes have their own fixed layer, Notes, at the top of the Layers panel: one eye for all of them. They don't belong to ordinary layers and are never locked by one. In Simple mode, notes are hidden.
